Volunteers needed for seniors’ interviews
Kealakehe High School is asking for community members to help with panel interviews for its 2013 graduating seniors.
In order to receive a diploma and participate in the graduation ceremony, all graduating Kealakehe High seniors are required to make a presentation as part of their required personal transition plan. Approximately 300 seniors will be interviewed. Student interviews will be held on the following days: April 10, 11, 24 and 25. The time commitment is one to two hours on a three- to four-member panel consisting of a community, faculty and staff member, interviewing up to three students.

Parker students do well at debate tournament
The Big Island District Debate Qualifying Tournament was held March 5 at Parker School in Waimea.
The following Parker School students earned first place: Paul Gregg in championship Lincoln-Douglas debate; Carrie Hiller in novice Lincoln-Douglas debate; Maia Tarnas and Elliott Jacobson in advanced public forum debate; Kyley Nishimura and Nya Phillips in beginning public forum debate; and Larissa Bolstad-Urquhart and Kyra Matsuda in junior varsity policy debate.
Debaters Marie Jobes, Josh Yost, Maxim Ionin, Evan Kasberg, Darnee Brighter, Max Elster, Marlon Lumper, Larissa Bolstad-Urquhart and Kyra Matsuda of Parker School, and Sean Ichinose of Christian Liberty, all qualified for the state forensic championship in debate. Parker School’s Nondi Lampkin qualified in the speech category.
Twenty-five Parker School debate team members have qualified for the state championship, slated April 18 to 20 at Kamehameha-Oahu and Punahou schools.

To receive quarterly honor roll recognition, a student must achieve a GPA of 3.5 or better; no grade below B-; elective grade of B+ or better; and conduct grade of A- or better.
Kahakai Elementary receives $5,000 grant
The Kahakai Elementary School physical education department recently received a $5,000 grant from the Komohana Kai I Homeowner’s Association and Kona Elks Lodge 2616. The homeowner’s association was dissolved this summer, and its assets were dispersed to local charities. This grant, arranged with assistance from the Elks, is earmarked for the school’s Spark Program, to enable the purchase of physical education equipment.
Konawaena Foundation golf fundraiser
scheduled for May 4
The eighth annual Konawaena Foundation Golf Tournament is scheduled May 4 at the Kona Country Club, with registration at 6:30 a.m. and a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m.
Big Island Honda will give away a new Honda for the first hole-in-one on the designated par 3 hole, as well as provide prizes on the three other par 3 holes. The format is a two-person scramble, with each person hitting at least six tee shots. Total handicap per team is 48, calculated by averaging the partners’ handicaps and taking 80 percent of that total as recommended by the U.S. Golf Association. Two mulligans per person are available for $5 each. Submit applications by April 26 to the Kona Country Club. Proceeds benefit the nonprofit Konawaena Foundation, in support of higher education programs at Konawaena High School.

Native Hawaiian scholarships available
Liko Ae Native Hawaiian Leadership Program is accepting applications from those of Hawaiian ancestry wanting to pursue college degrees from accredited schools throughout the United States. With funding made possible by the U.S. Department of Education, Title VII(B) Native Hawaiian Education Act and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, Native Hawaiian students pursuing vocational and higher education, from associate to doctoral degrees, are eligible to apply for these funds.
Liko Ae has supported more than 2,000 students since 2003. This year, Liko Ae’s Leadership Program will require students to participate in mentoring programs, focused community service projects and online community building. These wrap-around services will provide a support system for students as they advance toward their academic goals.
Applicants will be required to answer two essay questions, submit their FAFSA student aid report and an official transcript, and provide proof of Native Hawaiian ancestry. The application is available at likoae.org; all documents must be uploaded there. Application deadline is 4 p.m. May 1.

Kealakehe Elementary council accepting nominations
Kealakehe Elementary School Community Council is accepting nominations for the community and parent components for the 2013-14 academic year. Representatives are asked to serve for two years.
The council’s primary roles are to review the school’s academic and financial plans to ensure students’ needs are met, provide opportunity for discussions on school improvement, participate in evaluation of the principal and submit requests for waivers. The council meets monthly.
